Meanings of the cards when read in their upright position:
1. The Past
Seven of WandsThe Seven of Wands is a card of defense and confrontation. You have been forced to face a conflict head on. You are cornered and have no choice but to confront the source of the present turmoil. While you are successful and respected, there are those around you who would seek to knock you off your throne of position. Your only choices are to forfeit what you've worked for or to fight. Wands represent passion and fire and these are what you feel for your position and what you've accomplished. Use your vantage point at the top of the mountain to strategically plot your next move. This is not a time for compromise. You must adhere to your deeply held beliefs if you want to succeed in the battle.
The concept of the past sounds like an obvious one, but often there are subtleties involved. While this can include the Querent's past, it can also include events or the feelings of others that have had an impact or influence on the current situation. Does it necessarily mean things that took place long ago? Maybe... or it could be a conversation that took place last week.
2. The Present
Knight of PentaclesFrequently, the Knight refers to you, or someone who strongly influences your life in the situation in question, but does not have to be male. The way the Knight of Pentacles sits upon his horse, upright, and the way his steed appears to stand, steadfast, epitomizes the essence of this card, and the person in question. He stares out beyond his pentacle, which can indicate that he is so busy working that he has neglected or forgotten what he is working for. The Knight of Pentacles signifies a person who gives his greatest effort in all he does, but can sometimes be so driven and so determined that he loses sight of what is most important to him.
The center card symbolizes the present–the things that are happening right now around you. Because this spread contains only three cards, many things can be read into this card that might normally be seen in several cards in other spreads.
3. The Future
Five of SwordsThe Five of Swords indicates defeat. You may have just lost a battle (most likely a mental one), and find yourself in retreat, seeking to calm the choppy waters of your emotions. The character collecting the swords suggests that a score-keeper, motivated by revenge and vindication, is at the heart of your troubles. This card can also be a warning to you to avoid your own lusts for revenge, showing that only hurt and pain will be the result. Take time to heal your wounds. Concede your defeat and find new things to focus on.
Our last card represents the final outcome. It could be a long-term goal or an immediate resolution, depending on the question and the situation that the Querent is facing.
- Reading Guidance -
Before you draw: Hold a question or situation lightly in mind — not a yes/no, but an open one. What do I need to understand about this? works better than Will this happen?
Reading the spread: Look at each card individually first, then step back and read the spread as a sentence. Cards reinforce each other, contradict each other, and sometimes one card explains what another one seems to be hiding. Trust what strikes you immediately before you read the description.
If a card confuses you: Sit with it rather than pulling a clarifier right away. The card that doesn't make sense now often makes sense by the end of the day. If it still doesn't land, a single clarifying card drawn separately can help focus the energy.
