Meanings of the cards when read in their upright position:
1. The Past
Three of WandsThe person depicted in the Three of Wands sends his ships out, staying behind to 'hold the fort'. This card can indicate the desire to maintain existing relationships while testing the waters of new ones. In business terms, this is job hunting while you are still gainfully employed; in matters of love, this can indicate the desire to have an affair. Ponder the needs you are looking to fill with whatever you are seeking.
The concept of the past sounds like an obvious one, but often there are subtleties involved. While this can include the Querent's past, it can also include events or the feelings of others that have had an impact or influence on the current situation. Does it necessarily mean things that took place long ago? Maybe... or it could be a conversation that took place last week.
2. The Present
Ace of SwordsIn the Ace of Swords, the crowned sword of intellect is held over the mountains, literally denoting the triumph of mind over matter. Truth and honesty prevail, symbolized by the palm of victory, and peace is found, symbolized by the olive branch. Violent acts of force are not necessary to achieve your goals. Your determination and strength of Will have surmounted the obstacles in your path.
The center card symbolizes the present–the things that are happening right now around you. Because this spread contains only three cards, many things can be read into this card that might normally be seen in several cards in other spreads.
3. The Future
JusticeJustice is the twelfth card in the Major Arcana, and is given the number eleven, which is considered a 'master' number in numerology. Though the most familiar image of justice is that of a blindfolded woman, this image stares directly at us, unhindered...much more intimidating! Marking the halfway point in the Major Arcana, she symbolizes an equality between the past and the future—and the importance of the present to them both. She holds a set of balanced scales, and a sword, upright, ready for action. With her scales, she weighs all sides evenly, and with her sword, she cuts through the many layers of illusion and lies to the deeper truth. Her crown is a symbol of her status, gained through fair dealings, and her red robes indicate her power, passion, and vitality. With one foot visible, she is poised, ready to spring forth at any time to defend and act on the judgements she decrees.
Justice urges you to examine your past, and how the actions of your past have brought you to your present. In doing this, you realize how what you do right now will influence who you become in the future. You must accept that your present situation is one you helped create. In doing so, you can cut through the illusion of events to the wisdom you should be gaining from them. You can then begin to consciously take action to manifest better situations in your future. The Justice card often appears to signal that people are getting what they deserve. If the situation in question has legal ramifications, it can indicate a fair trial, a settlement, or winning in any general legal battle...the honest side will triumph.
Our last card represents the final outcome. It could be a long-term goal or an immediate resolution, depending on the question and the situation that the Querent is facing.
- Reading Guidance -
Before you draw: Hold a question or situation lightly in mind — not a yes/no, but an open one. What do I need to understand about this? works better than Will this happen?
Reading the spread: Look at each card individually first, then step back and read the spread as a sentence. Cards reinforce each other, contradict each other, and sometimes one card explains what another one seems to be hiding. Trust what strikes you immediately before you read the description.
If a card confuses you: Sit with it rather than pulling a clarifier right away. The card that doesn't make sense now often makes sense by the end of the day. If it still doesn't land, a single clarifying card drawn separately can help focus the energy.
